# Status reason codes

> The full catalog of status-reason codes, grouped by domain.

Every decline, error, and validation failure SmartRetry produces carries one of the codes below. You
encounter this catalog in two places:

* As `reason_code` on any [error response](/docs/api-reference/errors) — the exact code, unmodified.
* As `status.reasonCode` on a [transaction status](/docs/api-reference/payments/status) response — dot-separated
  and truncated to two segments. See [Reason code formats](/docs/api-reference/transaction-status#reason-code-formats)
  for the mapping between the two.

  fields may change without notice.
