Payments failing with code 52 are hard declines and typically cannot be recovered by retrying. SmartRetry still helps you avoid future hard declines with smarter routing and validation.

But many other declines in your payment flow may still be recoverable. SmartRetry identifies which failed transactions have recovery potential and applies the right strategy to recover them.

What it means

Visa Issuer Response Code 52 means "No checking account." The issuing bank declined the transaction because the presented card does not have a checking account linked to it. Because the underlying account structure cannot support a checking-based transaction, the payment cannot be approved as submitted.

Why does code 52 occur?

  • The card used for the transaction does not have a checking account linked to it.
  • A transaction was routed to debit a checking account using a card that is not associated with one.

How to solve 52?

Because the card does not have a linked checking account, retrying the identical transaction with the same account selection will fail. To resolve the decline, the shopper must provide another payment method or select an account type that is actually linked to the card.

Solving as a merchant

Do not automatically resubmit the same transaction details, as repeated attempts against a non-existent checking account can trigger Visa excessive retry fees. Instead, prompt the customer at checkout or via dunning workflows to supply an alternative payment method.

Solving as a client

The cardholder should complete the purchase using a different payment method or contact their issuing bank if they believe a checking account should be linked to their card.
