Payments failing with code 53 are hard declines and typically cannot be recovered by retrying. SmartRetry still helps you avoid future hard declines with smarter routing and validation.

But many other declines in your payment flow may still be recoverable. SmartRetry identifies which failed transactions have recovery potential and applies the right strategy to recover them.

What it means

Visa Issuer Response Code 53 indicates that the transaction was declined because there is "No savings account" associated with the presented card. This occurs when an authorization request attempts to pull funds from a savings account, but the issuing bank confirms that the card is not linked to one. Because the specified account type does not exist for that card, the issuer cannot complete the request.

Why does code 53 occur?

  • The customer selected a savings account at checkout or at a payment terminal, but their card is not linked to a savings account.
  • The payment request was routed to debit a savings account using a card that only supports checking or credit facilities.

How to solve 53?

Do not retry the identical transaction with the same account type selection, as the issuing bank has confirmed no savings account is attached to the card. To complete the purchase, the transaction must be re-initiated using a valid account type supported by the card (such as checking or credit), or the customer must provide an alternative payment method.

Solving as a merchant

Configure your payment system to treat Visa code 53 as a hard decline and suppress automated retries for the exact same request to avoid Visa excessive retry fees. If your checkout or point-of-sale flow allows account-type selection, prompt the shopper to choose a different account option or request a new payment method entirely.

Solving as a client

Attempt the transaction again by selecting a different account type (such as checking or credit) if prompted at the terminal or checkout, or use a different payment card.
