What it means

Visa Issuer Response Code 54 indicates an "Expired card" decline returned by the cardholder's issuing bank. This happens when the expiration date submitted in the authorization request has passed or no longer matches an active card on file with the issuer. Because the presented card credentials are no longer valid as submitted, the transaction cannot be approved without updated expiration details or a new payment method.

Why does code 54 occur?

  • The physical credit or debit card used for the transaction has passed its printed expiration date.
  • A stored card on file for a recurring subscription or saved checkout profile has expired since the last successful billing cycle.
  • The customer entered an outdated or incorrect expiration date during checkout.

How to solve 54?

To resolve a Visa Code 54 decline, you must obtain valid, unexpired payment credentials before attempting another authorization. Stop automated retries on the unchanged card details immediately. Prompt the cardholder to update their expiration date or provide an alternative payment method, or verify if updated credentials are available through an automated account updater tool before resubmitting.

Solving as a merchant

Configure your payment orchestration or billing system to halt immediate, blind retries when Code 54 is returned, ensuring compliance with Visa's declined transaction resubmission rules. For recurring billing or card-on-file models, check if your gateway or processor has returned updated card details, and trigger an automated dunning communication asking the customer to refresh their payment information.

Solving as a client

Check the physical card to verify if it has passed its expiration date and enter the new expiration date and security code from the replacement card issued by the bank. If a replacement card has not arrived yet, contact the issuing bank or use a different active payment method to complete the purchase.
